BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sitting in the movie theater on Saturday felt like stepping back in time. Movie lovers were able to purchase movie tickets for just $3 at participating theaters for National Cinema Day.

WBZ's Suzanne Sausville visited a theater in Braintree to ask movie-goers about their experience.

"She called me and said "do you want to go to the movies for three dollars?" I said sure! Lets go," Cindi told Sausville about how she ended up at the movies with her friend Janice.

The last time the average movie ticket price was $3 it was nearly 40 years ago and "Flash Dance" was in theaters. In 2022, the average movie ticket is $9.17, according to The Numbers.

During the pandemic, theaters had a difficult time staying afloat due to COVID-19 restrictions. Theaters have recently begun to see their audiences return to the cinema.

"I was looking around I was like 'hmm how many hours can I spend in a theater today?' I'm seeing "Nope" right now at about 11:30 A.M. and then tonight at 8 P.M. in Dedham I am going to see "Elvis"," a movie-goer named Chris said.

For many, like Chris' friend, the concessions were the most expensive part of the movie day.

"I'm a big popcorn advocate, I highly recommend spending all your money at the concession stands," he said.
