Nantucket Airport Briefly Closed, Fire Torches Several Cars In Rental Area

NANTUCKET, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A fire broke out in a Nantucket Memorial Airport parking lot early Monday morning leaving several cars touched, officials said in a statement.

At about 5:22 A.M., airport staff noticed a fire in a rental car overflow parking lot on the airport's closed-circuit television system and activated an alert system. Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department arrived at the scene and were able to contain the fire, officials said.

The airport was temporarily closed from the fire at around 5:30 A.M. according to authorities. It is unclear what started the fire at this time.

A photo of the scene on Nantucket Airport's Twitter account showed the front of several cars were torched and left with severe damage from the fire.

The airport is working with rental car agencies and agency partners to ensure the scene is safe. Flights are not being affected by the morning fire as the airport has since been reopened.
