NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A nonprofit in Newton is giving people a chance to channel their inner explorer.

Earthwatch organizes expeditions around the world to give everyday people a chance to become citizen scientists.

"Our mission is to get more important [and] interesting science done and also to inspire people to take action for a more sustainable planet, Jane Steinmetz, Office Managing Principal of Ernst and Young LLP's Boston office, told WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe. "People can sign up, go on a trip, and work hands-on with scientists right by their side helping them collect research data."

Steinmetz took her 17-year-old daughter on an Earthwatch owl expedition in the mountains of Utah. They worked alongside scientists at night studying owl ecology.

"It would be caught safely in this net and then we would tag the owls we would study and then release," Steinmetz said.

Other trips include restoring coral reefs in Bali, Indonesia, searching for fossils and fauna in Zambia, Africa, and tracking sharks and rays in Florida.
