2 Dead After Wrong-Way Driver Causes Crash In Saugus

SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police say that an overnight crash in Saugus, caused by a driver going the wrong way, has left two people dead, and another person seriously injured.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday on the northbound side of Route 1 when the wrong-way driver was going south. The car then crashed head-on into another an SUV that was carrying two adult passengers.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His car had also caught on fire.

A 51-year-old male passenger in the SUV was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A female passenger, also in the SUV, was also taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has yet to be revealed.

Police have identified the wrong-way driver as 29-year-old Luis Gallego, of Lynn.

Route 1 was closed for about 2 and a half hours on Saturday.

The incident is currently under investigation.
