20-Year-Old New Bedford Man Killed In Shooting Is Identified

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — New Bedford Police are investigating after a 20-year-old man was fatally shot early Monday morning.

The man has been identified as Lorenzo Gomes, 20, of New Bedford.

Bristol County District Attorney's office said it appears Gomes tried to drive himself to the hospital before losing consciousness in his vehicle. Emergency services rushed him to Saint Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

New Bedford Police got a 911 call reporting shots fired in the area of Tallman and North Front streets at around 12:11 a.m. on Monday

When police arrived, witnesses told them they heard loud banging that sounded like gunshots. Officers searched the area and eventually found Gomes in his vehicle on Belleville Avenue, the DA's office said.

A homicide investigation is underway. No further information has been released at this time.
