WORCESTER (WBZ-AM) -- The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester is considering dropping its 100-year-old mascot, the crusader, with a decision expected early next year.

For some, the name "crusaders" evokes violent images of clashes between Christians and Muslims, as well as other groups, during the 11th century.

Discussion about the name began last spring, with a series of campus-wide forums.

A spokesperson for Holy Cross says the college community is passionate about the school and its mission, and that the discussion over whether to change the name has been "spirited."

Hundreds submitted comments, including some who contend a "crusader" is simply someone fighting for a cause.

A public comment period has now ended, and the working group, made up of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, will compile community reaction in a report to the Board of Trustees in February.

WBZ NewsRadio1030's Lana Jones reports.
