Homeless Population Evicted From Lawrence Parking Garage

LAWRENCE, MA (WBZ-AM) — Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera says removing a homeless population from the Buckley garage was very much needed.

A group called the movement family had been serving food to the homeless at the Buckley garage here at Amesbury and Common streets, a City-owned facility where you can park your car or grab the bus.

But the situation got bad, says Rivera, with people living in the garage, relieving themselves there, breaking into cars and sleeping in them, and harassing customers for money.

Rivera says it’s similar to the approach taken by the city to the encampment under The Casey Bridge recently

“You can stay under the bridge, we don’t care but you can’t be down there committing a crime if you have a warrant, using drugs, partying and stuff like that and the place emptied out,” he Rivera said.

The founder of the movement Family lives in Methuen.

Rivera suggests he might want to team up with an organization in his own community to help homeless there, saying Lawrence has many organizations to help.
