BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) —  Alex Cora and Ayanna Pressley are the Boston Globe Magazine 2018  Bostonians of The Year.

The newspaper is recognizing Cora, the Red Sox’s first manager of color, who lead the red sox to a World Championship in his rookie year as manager.

Pressley, beat a popular incumbent in the primaries and went on to a historic election to Congress becoming the commonwealth’s first African-American elected to the United State House of Representatives.

Neil Swidey, the Globe writer who profiled the two honorees tells WBZ NewsRadio’s Kendall Buhl that their achievements go well beyond their history-making wins – he found they had quite a bit in common.

“Initially you would think boy Ayanna Pressley and Alex Cora have nothing in common right? One is from sports and one is from politics, but when I spent some time with both of them, several themes came up in my head. Obviously being ‘first.’ they were both determined not to let that label define who they are and that be the beginning and not the columniation of their work,” he said.

“Both have been on the national and international radar with their similar approaches in being risk-takers…you realize that willingness to take risks but to have them informed by strategy and research.”
