BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - The Frozen Four returns to Boston for an eighth time tonight, leaving local hockey fans wondering who to cheer for. Four teams from Michigan, Minnesota and Colorado will take over the TD garden, all vying for the college hockey national championship.

All five Massachusetts teams in the 16-team NCAA Tournament got knocked out in the first round, and Quinnipiac bowed out a round later.

New England fans can however watch one of their own in Thursday night's game. Michigan star, Matty Beniers, grew up in Hingham and played for Milton Academy and the Cape Cod Whalers before heading out to Michigan to join the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Beniers was originally committed to Harvard University, but when Covid-19 canceled all Ivy League athletics for the 2020-21 season, he decided instead to play for the Wolverines.

WBZ's Jim MacKay spoke with Christina Maglione Beniers about her son, Matty.

"Family coming in, local friends, the house will be filled." She says of Thursday night's game. "Regardless we'll be there cheering him on and I'm so proud of the team."

Beniers is expected to join the Seattle Kraken after the Frozen Four. He was also a member of the U.S. Olympic team in February, registering a goal and an assist in four games.

Frozen Four takes place at the TD Garden Thursday, April 7th. Michigan vs. Denver at 5 p.m. Then Minnesota vs. Minnesota State at 8 p.m.
