Newburyport Hosts Climate Justice Rally For Earth Day

NEWBURYPORT (WBZNewsRadio) - In celebration of Earth Day, the city of Newburyport is hosting an Earth Day Climate Justice rally in Waterfront Park from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event celebrating Earth Day will feature a short march, live music, educational speakers about the earth and climate, along with activities for the whole family such as puppet shows, art installations and Indigenous crafts.

Megan Chiano, a local artist, collected a large amount of trash from the shores of Newburyport and Plum Island. She's been hard at work creating an art installation using what's she's found, including lobster traps, fishing lines, and other marine debris. Chiano said as a mother, she hopes to set an example on how to better clean and protect our earth now, to help keep it that way for future generations.

The event is sponsored by the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist in collaboration with community partners. At 1 p.m. a rally will begin with marchers congregating at Market Square. At 1:30 p.m., the group will march to the nearby Waterfront Park for musical, educational and entertainment events including a puppet show.

The Climate Justice Rally isn't the only event in Newburyport this weekend to celebrate our Earth. There will be a number of ACES cleanup events on Saturday. At Mass Audubon's Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary in Wenham, they'll be celebrating Earth Month with a number of activities.
