SALEM (WBZNewsRadio) - The electric blue trees outside the Peabody Essex Museum are hard to miss. The museum's newest outdoor installation aims to raise awareness to deforestation and climate change and is part of their "Climate Action Opening Celebration" that kicked off on Earth Day.
The installation was created by artist Konstatin Dimopoulos and uses biologically-safe watercolor and is expected to last for a year to 18 months.
Dimopoulos said he chose the color blue because trees do not exist in nature in that specific hue. So when visitors to Salem see the electric blue color, the hope is it will prompt a larger conversation about the role of trees in our local environment and beyond.
PEM's installation of Blue Trees is the 27th international exhibition by Dimopoulos and the first one in the greater Boston area. Previous installations have taken place on Cape Cod in 2019 and at the Currier Museum of Art In New Hampshire in 2018.
PEM has three other exhibits as part of their current climate and environment initiative at the museum.
