BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - With just days from one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, gas prices continue to soar, prompting some to change their Memorial Day plans.

Nearly 40 million people are expected to travel for the unofficial start to summer on Memorial day weekend.

Gas Buddy is out with their annual summer travel survey, which found that gas prices and inflation are impacting 70 percent of American's travel plans this summer. Despite the high prices, 50 percent of Americans still plan on hitting the roads, which is up from last summer when gas cost $1.50 less a gallon.

The survey also found people are adjusting their typical spending patterns while on the trip with more people reporting they'll make fewer stops while on the road at places like convenience stores, to save pennies where they can.

The current average price for a gallon of gas in the state is $4.74 for regular. So to fill up a 14-gallon tank is going to run you $66.36. That same fill-up cost $40.74, this time last year.

When it comes to being on the road, drivers will want to avoid driving on Thursday and Friday between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. The best time to hit the road will be early in the morning, before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. And if you're waiting until Monday to drive home, you'll want to wait until after 11 a.m. but before the afternoon rush.
