BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - While the official first day of winter is a little less than a week away, New England is getting it's first winter storm of the season ranging from heavy rain, strong winds and even snow in some parts.

Many of you are waking up to rain and snow Friday morning, as the storm arrived just after midnight. Friday morning's commute is going to be a slippery one. The slush on the roads will only increase the further west you are, so plan accordingly.

A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in the Berkshires, southwestern part of New Hampshire and Vermont, where residents could see anywhere from 4-to-6 inches of snow. The New England coastline north of Massachusetts, from New Hampshire to Maine have a pretty good chance of seeing 6-inches or more of the white stuff.

Friday will see heavy rain at times through out the day in the Greater Boston area, with some localized flooding and a potential for ponding in the roadways. Aside from the rain, strong winds are expected through the day across the eastern part of the state. The Massachusetts coast in particular could see up to 50 miles per hour, with the rest of the area expected to get closer to 20-to-40 miles per hour gusts.

With the wind always comes the potential for power outages.

Saturday morning will bring snow further east with a very minor accumulation expected but with temperatures higher than freezing, the white stuff isn't likely to stick around.
