HAMILTON, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Hamilton Police Department has a brand new member, after K-9 Luca was sworn in earlier this month.

Before the pooch could don on the badge, the dog needed to submit fingerprints to the Massachusetts State Police ID department, just to make sure the new employee didn't have a criminal record.

"Somehow this slipped through his background check, but much to our shock, it turns out K-9 Luca has a record!" Hamilton police wrote. "The MSP ID section found three charges were dismissed upon completion of a canine diversion program. After a brief internal investigation, it was recommended that K-9 Luca must give extra licks to the public as a way of showing his remorse and commitment to the Town of Hamilton."

Luca was officially sworn into the department on July 28th, by Town of Hamilton Town Clerk Carin Kale and is the department's very first K-9 officer. Since then, Luca has been busy out and about in the community, attending the Hamilton Block Party, and the 24th Annual Vehicle Night on August 2nd. Earlier this week, K-9 Luca stopped by the Hamilton Council on Aging and Senior Center to have lunch with the group and teach them more about his role in not just the police department but in the community as a whole.

K-9 Luca will provide comfort, support and relief to those who may have experienced trauma.
