BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several people were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at the Back Bay MBTA stop on Sunday evening. Boston Emergency Medical Services said they responded to calls about the accident just after 6:00 PM Sunday.

The escalator, which leads from the Commuter Rail platform to street level, suddenly reversed direction, sending the people on the escalator flying to the bottom.

Boston EMS said nine people were hospitalized with "minor injuries." Witnesses described a more gruesome scene, with blood from the injured on the ground after the people on the escalator fell like dominos, according to WBZ-TV.

It's not the first time the station has had escalator trouble: a similar "reversal" accident happened at Back Bay in 1996 according to UPI, and again in 2011. As of Monday morning, only one of the escalators that goes to the Commuter Rail platform is running.
