CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cambridge Youth Hockey is taking a second to acknowledge the biggest fans in the stands— hockey moms. With the program's "Hockey for Hockey Moms!" class every Tuesday night, women are offered the chance to work on their skating technique, skills, stick handling, and knowledge of the game rules.

Students bring their own gear, including skates, pads, sticks, and a helmet with a shield or cage.

WBZ's Carl Stevens spoke with coach Jake Jaffe who started the program ten years ago to see if hockey moms watching their kids play would want to try it out themselves.

"I'll say they're my favorite group to coach, I've coached kids to the littlest little ones to the surliest teenagers— they put on the pads and just become different people. Really fun people who want to play hockey," Jaffe said.

"Each session will conclude with a scrimmage to put your skills into action. The goal is to provide a fun, safe, and relaxed environment for all of the moms who want to enjoy hockey as much as their kids do!" the program website described.

According to the CYH, drops-in are welcome for $20 each session to be paid at the rink to the coach running the class. Each skate night starts at the Simoni Rink in Cambridge at 8 p.m., and is for woman over the age of 22, according to the website.

"I've wanted to do this for years. My kids play hockey, I drive them around all winter to their practices and games, and it was so much fun, I loved it," one participating mom named Lisa said.

"I've been hanging out in rinks for the last nine years and have always wanted to get out on the ice, it looks so fun," another mom said.

Those who are interested in dropping in can find out more about registration here.
