WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An alligator that has been occasionally spotted swimming around the Westfield River for months has finally been captured. West Springfield Animal Control said a Good Samaritan caught the male gator on Tuesday and handed it over to the Massachusetts Environmental Police. It will be given over to a reptile rescue.

The alligator has been seen in the river since at least August, according to the non-profit West Springfield Environmental Committee.

Before this point, the gator was last seen during the Big E, the group said. The Committee said the alligator probably started out as an illegal pet and then got too big, and was eventually released into the river.
