BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Animal Rescue League of Boston is teaming with the Franklin Park Zoo to keep local pets' bellies full.

Starting Sunday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 30, the zoo is hosting a pet food drive as part of ARL's Keep Pets F.E.D. (Full Every Day) program, an initiative to collect pet food donations for animals and families in need.

"As the prices in food keep going up, so does the demand for help getting this food," said Anna Chaletzky of ARL. "Food insecurity can hit the home, and that doesn’t only hit the people, that hits their pets, and pets are family as well."

Chaletzky told WBZ NewsRadio that the food drive is looking for donations of dog and cat food (both wet and dry), as well as cat litter, pee pads, treats, and toys. Their goal this month is to collect 15,000 pounds of food.

There are drop-off boxes inside the zoo, and anyone who donates can receive $5 off a daytime admission ticket.

People can also drop off food at ARL's three locations in Boston, Brewster, and Dedham or purchase food through the league's Amazon wish list or Chewy wish list.

WBZ's Suzanne Sausville (@WBZSausville) reports.
