ASHLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Few people like going to the dentist, but one local practice is trying to make it a little more painless.

Dr. Tej Shah has a big flat screen TV perched on the ceiling, and he’ll put a video game controller in your hands when you sit down for some dental work.

"If they want to play a game, they can play a game, if they just want to watch watch a movie, they can watch a movie," he said.

Shah owns Zen Family Dental in Ashland, and describes himself as "obsessed" with video games. Rightly so — before his dentistry career, Shah used to design video games at Lockheed Martin to help train U.S. Marines.

For now, he's putting on a little friendly competition to attract some new patients on Saturday, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM: a Super Smash Bro's tournament with some hefty prizes.

The winner gets a $250 Amazon gift card, 2nd place gets a free cleaning, and third gets an electric toothbrush.
