ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — AJ Quetta is only 18-years-old, and he's been told he may never walk again. It's a heartbreaking story that captured the attention of so many, including the Boston Bruins and the New England Patriots.
AJ played varsity hockey for Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro. He suffered a spinal cord injury last month when he slammed into the boards head-first.
Since then, he's been treated at Mass. General Hospital. For the next three months, he will be in Atlanta, Ga., at one of the nation's leading rehab facilities, the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center.
Tim Sullivan, President of Bishop Feehan High School, tweeted a message Friday from AJ's father, who thanked everyone for their continued support and prayers.
"Words can't express our steadfast appreciation to all the donors during this time," Quetta Sr. said. "This would not be possible without all the support we have received. AJ realizes how awesome and incredible the support has been. He is determined to beat the odds and return to his family and friends. He is very motivated."
The community has already stepped up in a big way to support AJ's recovery; a GoFundMe has raised over $875,000. According to ESPN, the Bruins have pledged a minimum donation of $100,000, and the team will be auctioning off game-used sticks to raise more funds for their fellow hockey player. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has also pledged to match up to $25,000, ESPN reports.
Starting next week, when many schools go on break, there's another fun way locals can help.
From Monday to Thursday, Showcase Cinema De Lux in North Attleboro will be donating 100 percent of ticket proceeds towards AJ's treatment and recovery fund.
