UPDATE 4:42 p.m.: The child's mother has been located.

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police are investigating after a baby was found in a trash barrel in Dorchester on Friday afternoon.

The child was found alive inside a trash can outside Pat's Pizza on Dorchester Avenue near Adams Street at around 1 p.m. Friday, and was taken to Boston Medical Center in an unknown condition, WBZ-TV's I-Team reports.

Authorities confirmed the baby is a newborn.

Parts of the street were cordoned off with police tape Friday afternoon, as authorities continued to investigate.

A security guard at the nearby Boston Housing Authority apartment building said a resident had called 911 after hearing the sounds of a baby coming from the trash barrel, according to the Dorchester Reporter.

This is a developing story.
