DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders threw his support behind striking teachers in Dedham Friday morning.

"Right now there is a movement of workers across the country who are taking back their power at a scale we have not seen in recent memory," Sen. Sanders tweeted. "I stand with educators in Dedham, Massachusetts. This takes courage."

Sanders' tweet comes a week after he spoke in support of striking sanitation workers in Marshfield.

The Dedham teachers are striking to renegotiate issues including health insurance, as well as policies on student cell phone usage and protection from sexual harassment.

School was cancelled in Dedham Friday as teachers took to the picket line.

Teachers went forward with the strike, even though the Department of Labor Relations has deemed it illegal under Massachusetts public employee guidelines.

This is the first public teacher's strike in Massachusetts since 2007.
