BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Get ready to pack your patience on the roadways these next few days, as traffic is expected to increase around the Boston area ahead of the Boston Marathon and Massachusetts Spring vacation week. To keep up with the congestion, Boston officials are encouraging people to either walk, bike, or take public transportation especially on Marathon Monday; as there will be numerous street closures and detours to the planned routes in effect to accommodate the influx of spectators and runners descending on Beantown for the big race.

The Boston Athletic Association is implementing four miles of additional barricades along the route this year to protect runners from spectators after Newton Police had a problem with spectators getting in the way of runners along the route last year. Road closures should be expected, and the weather is predicted to look fantastic, so there is more reason to put on those walking shoes and prepare to traverse the city on foot on a warm spring day!
