BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – An orthopedic spine surgeon at Boston Medical Center is being reprimanded for missing critical portions of a surgery nearly five years ago.

The Massachusetts Board of Medicine is reprimanding Dr. Tony Tannoury after he recently admitted in a consent order that he was not present for an emergency ankle surgery back in November 2016.

The Boston Globe reports that Tannoury left at the start of the procedure to eat in his car, but fell asleep and missed the rest of the surgery.

The board stated Tannoury left the patient “under the care of the chief resident when he was the orthopedic attending covering for emergencies.” Tannoury, who did not return to the hospital until the day after, has also been fined $5,000 for the incident.
