BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Friday night a Boston police officer that was responding to an armed robbery in progress in Roxbury is expected to survive after being shot multiple times on scene.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox says the officer had approached the suspect before being fired upon, and was transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment. Officials say two other officers were not hit by gunfire, but were also injured in the incident that happened on Cedric Street near Clifford Park and the Mason School.

Cox says the suspect was taken into custody.

"This just goes to show the difficult work that officers deal with daily— it's just very troubling in today's world," Cox said.

"I'm so relieved and grateful to know that the officer is safe and with loved ones right now. We see again and again just how much Boston is blessed to have first responders who are so professionally trained and keeping us safe every single day. I want to thank the doctors and nurses here at BMC, EMTS, and fellow officers who immediately went into action," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.

The Boston Police Patrolmen's Association asked for prayers for the harmed officer Friday night, emphasizing the point that violence towards an officer is never okay.
