Boston Police Remember Officer Jonathan Houghton 196 Years After His Death

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The Boston Police Department (PBD) remembered the service and sacrifice of the Boston Watch officer who died on patrol nearly 200 years ago.

BPD placed a Hero Sign at Broad Street and State Street in honor of the passing of Jonathan Houghton.

On the night of December 12, 1825, Houghton was seriously injured by a suspect with an axe while on patrol in downtown Boston. On December 19, the officer succumbed to his injuries and died at age 61. He left behind his wife along with 15 children, according to BPD.

Houghton’s death is one of eight that were re-classified in 2014 as line of duty deaths. He is buried at the Copps Hill Burial Ground in Boston.

Houghton’s name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial at Boston Police Headquarters as well as the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial located at the State House.
