BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Public Schools will close on Friday, Feb. 3 due to the cold weather emergency, BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper announced Thursday.

Boston will be hit with extremely cold temperatures on Friday and Saturday, the wind chill predicted to go as low as -21 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday and -27 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, according to forecasts.

"With extreme weather conditions and many of our students commuting to and from school, walking, and waiting for public transportation outdoors, we have made the decision to close for the day," school officials said in a statement. "Due to the low temperatures and strong wind gusts, there is an increased risk of hypothermia and frostbite. We acknowledge closing schools is a challenge to many of our families and encourage families in need to take advantage of warming centers on Friday and Saturday. We make these decisions with the best interests of our students top of mind and we want to ensure they are safe in these weather conditions."

Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) locations will be activated as warming centers on Friday and Saturday.

The deadline for round-one school registration will be extended to Monday, Feb. 6. All extracurricular activities and school building permits on Friday and Saturday will be canceled.
