BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Normally, this time of year, Boston students would be descending into the city to search for an apartment. But not this fall, with more colleges moving to online learning due to COVID-19.
Tyler Monroe works at Rent Source in Cambridge. He said that's turning the tables on landlords and rental agents.
"Now the renter has much more leverage than the landlords do because there's just more inventory because people aren't coming to the area," Monroe said.
More inventory means lower rents for prospective tenants, which is worrisome to landlords.
"There is just a lot available, and to have that many available at this point in the season is really alarming," Monroe said. "We have probably five times the inventory at this point as we did last year."
The best advice for students right now, it seems, is to shop around and find a good deal.
