BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Tuesday, students dug in their shovels to mark the beginning of the construction of Boston's new William E. Carter School located in the city's Lower Roxbury and South End neighborhoods. The Carter School, which serves students with severe, intensive disabilities and complex health needs, has officially begun the construction process for a new building for students to study in.
WBZ's Karyn Regal visited the groundbreaking where students used adaptive tools to make the ceremonial dig.
Teacher Kevin Crowley spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony and said that the students in attendance had signs that shared their thoughts on the new school.
"All of our students have symbols that represent the words they chose to describe our new school," Crowley said. Many of the students held signs said 'happy,' though some said they were 'excited' but 'frustrated' following the new change.

Among the changes, the Carter School will have a new therapeutic pool. School officials say each classroom is comprised of five students, one teacher, and two assistants, with services like one-on-one sessions with a variety of therapists.
