BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius had to pinch hit as a classroom teacher on Wednesday because of an ongoing staffing shortage in the Boston Public Schools.

Cassellius said on Tuesday that the system was down more than 1,000 staff members, who were out sick — though she said not all of them had COVID. Included in that number were 461 school teachers. Cassellius told WBZ-TV that she was needed at the Nathan Hale School in Roxbury. She filled in for a 4th grade class, teaching poetry, language fluency, and independent reading.

"Full class of brilliant, amazing students. So engaged...The students are so eager to learn," she said.

Cassellius said on Tuesday that more teachers were expected to call out of school, and that 42 schools had at least 20% of their staff out.
