PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cancer patients are fighting back thanks to a free boxing class at a gym on the north shore.

The “#%@! Cancer Fight Club” is a free boxing class that's open for anyone impacted by cancer, including people who have or had cancer, caregivers, or those who have lost a loved one to the disease. The class happens one Sunday each month at DiHard Fitness in Peabody.

David Bethune and Molly Foster, both cancer survivors, founded the class four years ago as a way to give people a way to take out their anger against cancer. It began with only a few members, but now, up to 40 people attend the class each month.

One of those fighters is Karen Richard, who has been cancer-free for 10 years now.

"It's like a family," Richard told WBZ's Brooke McCarthy. "Everyone is so welcoming and helping each other. We're all in the same fight against cancer."

Diane Calver is the owner of DiHard Fitness and a friend of both Bethune and Foster. Every month she donates her gym space so the “#%@! Cancer Fight Club” can happen. Calver said she is happy to give those affected by cancer a space to unwind.

"I feel like I'm helping them do whatever they need to do for that one hour," Calver said. "I commend them all for coming in here and just letting themselves have a moment to just say f— this because that's what this is really about."

The next class will take place in April.
