BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — School will be back in session for Boston Public Schools this Thursday, despite some students thinking they will have one extra day of summer.

BPS does not plan to cancel or shorten the first day because of the heat. Some schools in the district do not have air conditioning. But, the district says there are protective measure in place to keep kids cool.

“We feel prepared,” said Superintendent of Boston Public Schools Mary Skipper at a press conference on Wednesday.

“Right now, I think [we’re] getting through tomorrow, the schools that we’ve spoken to and the leaders feel comfortable that we’ll be able to do that,” said Skipper. “We’re being as proactive as possible with all of it. It looks like tomorrow will be the crux of it and then Friday it will start to cool back off again.”

BPS spokesperson Max Baker said that more than 4,000 A/Cs were installed in more than 70 schools over the past couple of years. However, 10 schools in the hub still do not have access to A/C with major electrical upgrades needed for instillation. Four schools are set to get A/C this fall.

Also, some of the district's school buses will not have A/C.

"Some of the newer buses will and most of the older fleet won't until we do the windows," said Skipper.
