UPDATE: Prosecutors have identified the shooter as the girl's father, Jesse Fuller. They said Fuller accidentally fired a gun that he had in his sweatshirt pocket and does not have a license to carry.

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – A seven-year-old girl is recovering after she was grazed by a bullet while walking on the sidewalk on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester Thursday.

The incident caught the attention of Acting Mayor Kim Janey, who appeared onsite, as well as outraged the local community. Suffolk County District Attorney Rachel Rollins was equally infuriated.

“This happened in the middle of the day, on a school day, and a seven-year-old child is now traumatized and a victim of gun violence,” Rollins said. “Thank God it is a graze, but centimeters from there we could have been at a very different crime scene.”

Surveillance video shows children suddenly running into a store for cover when the shots rang out.

Rollins said police do not believe the event was targeted and the situation had been contained.

“We don’t believe the rest of the community should be worried regarding their safety,” Rollins continued. “The DA’s Office is going to be working around the clock to assist Boston police detectives with search warrants and everything else that they need.”

Police have arrested a suspect, who was found running away from the scene, but they have yet to release their identity.

The girl was said to have non-life-threatening injuries.
