CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The FDA approved a third Covid vaccine dose for those who are immunocompromised, and only Cambridge-based Moderna and Pfizer's vaccines have the green light at this time.

The FDA's approval is good news for the millions of Americans whose weakened immune systems put them at greater risk of breakthrough infections, hospitalization, and death.

This category includes organ transplant recipients, certain cancer patients and people with HIV.

However, when it comes to the rest of the general population experts say they're able to wait.

"We do not believe that others, elderly or non-elderly who are not immunocompromised need a vaccine right at this moment, but this is a dynamic process, and the data will be evaluated," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Third doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines could start being administered as soon as this weekend.
