CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A popular ice cream shop in Cambridge has been named one of the top ice cream shops in the nation, according to Thrillist.

Toscanini’s in Central and Kendall Square made Thrillist's Top 40 Ice Cream Shops in the U.S. list, joined by Ferris Acres Creamery of Connecticut as the only New England shops to make the list. The shop has been open since 1981 and specializes in ice cream with an international flair.

Owner Gus Rancatore, who runs the business with his sister Mimi, told WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe they pride themselves on making unique and diverse hand-made flavors.

"Toscanini’s has always been more interested in making ice cream from other places and other cultures," he said. "We make Caribbean ice cream flavors, we make South Asian ice cream flavors like Kulfi and Mango."

Thrillist praised Toscanini's for its unique flavors, writing that its burnt caramel is the "stuff of dessert legend", while also recommending flavors like Vienna Finger Cookie, Peanut Butter Fluff, Goat Cheese Brownie, and Belgian Chocolate. Rancatore said their most popular flavor is one called B3.

"It has brownies, brown sugar, and brown butter," he said. "Brown butter is something that when you heat butter up and you caramelize it a little, it begins to develop a nutty aftertaste."

One customer had high praise for Toscanini's.

"Every time we come here it's always great," he said. "They've got some flavors that you haven't seen anywhere else."
