CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — "My friend just sent me this video from the Netherlands. It’s so frustrating we [can't] do stuff like this in the US."
That was the text that accompanied Somerville resident Aaron Greiner's video posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The post, sent on Saturday, was a POV video of a cyclist riding down the clean, protected, clearly marked bike lanes of Amsterdam.
Except it wasn't Amsterdam, it was Cambridge's Inman Square. The area's new bike lanes were recently finished after a years-long project.
"Yeah, a bit of a tongue-in-cheek joke," Greiner told WBZ NewsRadio Wednesday. "Pretending something was somewhere outside the U.S. as a way to show that we actually can do things here."
Unfortunately, the joke did not exactly land with everyone.
"A lot of people got confused, a lot of people actually thought it was outside the U.S." Greiner said.
Greiner's mentions also became flooded with people correcting him for his "mistake."
"Internet sleuths saying the signs were in English," said Greiner. "But actually that was an indication, perhaps, that people maybe don’t realize a lot of the good works [that are] happening in the U.S."
The post now has a fact check box beneath it letting readers know that the footage is indeed from Cambridge. Still, despite any mix-ups, "well, actuallys," or memes, Greiner noted that people around the country shared the video with their local lawmakers, asking if Cambridge is rethinking the roads, why can't they.
"Biking’s the fastest way to get around Boston," Greiner said. "You know, the T is not the fastest and you don’t get stuck in traffic."
