CAPE COD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Cape Cod Baseball League is gearing up for another summer season, and an official on one of the teams said the CCBL faces serious challenges this year.
Adam Cormier, public relations director for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, said Cape teams face financial ruin this season because of the state's Covid safety guidelines.
The guidelines limit fan capacity to just 150 people. This, as experts are predicting a record-breaking tourist season on the Cape.
"That just means we're going to have to turn away thousands of families coming to the Cape with hopes of catching a Cape League game," said Cormier.

In addition, he said every Cape League team is a franchise and financially responsible for themselves, which means they need to bring in $50,000 per year in revenue to operate.
"The only way that teams are funded is really from fans coming to games, buying concessions and buying merchandise," said Cormier.
A league meeting on April 21 will determine the fate of the 2021 season. Cormier said he is hoping the state can grant the league an attendance waiver.
