WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The man suspected of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend as she left the bathroom of a Worcester restaurant Wednesday night has been sent to a psychiatric facility for a mental evaluation.
Carlos Asencio, 28 of Derry, New Hampshire, was held without bail and sent to Bridgewater State Hospital at his arraignment Friday on murder and other charges in the killing of 31-year-old Amanda Dabrowski.
A court psychologist told a judge Asencio appeared "sullen, depressed, and quite tearful," and reported considering suicide. Asencio's attorney had no comment outside court.
Police said Dabrowski had gone to O'Connor's Restaurant for her first meeting with a book club, and was stabbed 15 to 20 times. She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Other patrons came to her aid and restrained Asencio, who police said was carrying two knives. A second man was also stabbed and received non-life-threatening injuries.
According to WBZ-TV, Asencio had a warrant out for his arrest after he allegedly broke into Dabrowski's home wearing a ski mask and attacked her with a stun gun.
He then crossed the Canadian border, and took a flight to Mexico. Police believed he was still there; federal authorities are investigating how he re-entered the country.
Asencio is due back in court July 25.
