Christmas In September? Some Greater Boston Stores Already In Holiday Mode

NORWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's not even October yet, but some Boston-area stores are already selling Christmas merchandise. One aisle at the Home Depot in Norwood was filled with lighted wreaths, decorated with bows and Christmas ornaments. Another aisle featured blow-up Christmas decorations.

"I love it, because I love holidays, but it's definitely more pressure to spend money," one shopper said. Another said there was some benefit to seeing the decorations pop up early, so shoppers have a chance to buy them before they're sold out.

Not everyone was a fan. Another shopper, George, was asked if the early decorations put him in the spirit. "I think it's stupid. It kind of irritates me, I feel as though they're just in it for the money, they don't have any idea of what Christmas is about," he said.

Seasonal creep in commercial settings has been happening with other seasons this year: pumpkin spice and other fall offerings started in early August at a number of local and national coffee chains. In that case, store owners said extending the season was a good way to make their cash-strapped businesses some extra money.
