BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — If all goes according to plan, the Boston City Council could have a voice in creating the city's multi-billion dollar annual budget.
Acting Mayor Kim Janey said she signed off on an amendment on Monday that would let the city council amend the budget, calling it a key step that would "democratize Boston’s budget building process." Right now, the city's charter places the budget under the mayor's control.
The amendment would take the form of a ballot question in November's elections, and Boston's voters would need to vote in favor of the measure for it to take effect.

Boston's city council approved the amendment in a unanimous vote in May.
Mayor Janey also said she was appropriating $1 million of the city's $3.75 billion FY '22 budget to create an "Office of Participatory Budgeting," which will gather resident opinions on where the city's money should be spent.
