WEYMOUTH (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Mayor of Weymouth has declared a State of Emergency for the town and as a result, the high school has been turned into a shelter for the region.

Mayor Bob Hedlund said the declaration was made to ensure that the town has all the resources needed to recover from the storm.

As of early Thursday morning, only a handful of people without power were at the Red Cross shelter to stay the night and to use the shelters resources, including electricity.

One of the shelter's operators told WBZ NewsRadio that they expect more people to come to the shelter later on Thursday. They say after one night in the dark with low temperatures, many people in the area may not want a back-to-back night like that.

The shelter is in the school's gym and is pet-friendly, but people are asked to have a crate or a pet-container.

Town officials said clean-up efforts were the focus of crews on Wednesday, including clearing blocked roads of wires. Power restoration efforts will begin on Thursday.

However, the town said it would be a 3-day effort to get power fully restored. As of Wednesday night, the town expected power to be fully restored by Saturday.

Transportation is available for Weymouth residents, anyone in need of a ride can call Weymouth Elder Services at 781-682-3812.
