BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — 56 years ago Friday, the Godfather of Soul, none other than James Brown, came to Boston for a legendary performance in the wake of major unrest after the assassination of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on April 4, 1968. The April 5 concert, held at the Boston Garden was nearly canceled by then Mayor Kevin White over fears of riots and violence that were happening all over the country after King’s death in Memphis, Tennessee. To honor Brown’s legendary performance at the Garden on that legendary night, James Brown Protégé Tony Wilson will lead a show at Dorchester’s Strand Theater to honor Brown’s music and incredible legacy! The show will feature an 11-piece band accompanying Wilson and it is completely FREE to attend with admission on a first come, first served basis.

Brown’s show at Boston Garden all those years ago was performed to a sold-out crowd and the city was brought to a calm at least for one memorable night, thanks to Brown.
