Concord, N.H. Track Coach Fired Over Mask Mandate

PEMBROKE, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An outdoor track and field coach at Pembroke Academy in New Hampshire has been fired after refusing to make his team wear masks at track meets.

Brad Keyes was fired on Monday after coaching track and field at Pembroke for four years.

Pembroke Academy and the schools it competes with recently adopted the state Athletic Association's recommendations, requiring masks at all track and field meets with few exceptions.

"I believed it was literally an insane decision, to have kids wearing masks while running all out in those races," Keyes said. "I decided I could not tell the kids to do that. I would not make them do that and I would not pretend that it made any sense," he continued.

Keyes insists the masks aren't necessary outdoors. He's received an outpouring of support but no sign of getting his job back.
