CAPE COD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Following the recent increase of violence in Northern Ireland sparked by economic agreements related to Brexit, a house foreign affairs subcommittee is reaffirming U.S. support for the Good Friday Agreement.

"This recent violence stopped many of us in our tracks, myself included," said Massachusetts Congressman Bill Keating.

He chaired the hearing held by the subcommittee on Europe, Energy, the Environment and Cyber. The hearing centered around the longstanding impact and importance of the Good Friday agreement, especially now.

Keating said with Brexit in the rearview mirror, Northern Ireland is now seeing the fallout.

"We're seeing the impacts play out at shipping ports and unstocked supermarkets on the streets of Northern Ireland," said Keating.

As a result, he is calling on President Joe Biden to appoint another cabinet position.

"I will be circulating a letter among colleagues formally asking the president to appoint a special envoy to Northern Ireland," said Keating.

In addition, he heard testimony from political leaders and human rights advocates in Northern Ireland on how the U.S. and E.U. can help maintain peace in the country.
