TJ Connelly Steps Down As Fenway Park DJ After 15 Years

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — He's one of the many unsung workers who makes the Fenway Park experience what it is: the DJ. But the next time you pay a visit, there will be a new person playing the tunes.

TJ Connelly announced this week that he is stepping away from his role as Fenway Park's DJ after 15 years in the booth.

Connelly was well-liked throughout his time on Lansdowne Street for his ability to incorporate music into the mood of the game -- like the seventh inning play of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," the victory play of "Dirty Water" and even the hotly contested fan-favorite song, "Sweet Caroline."

“It just sort of happened," Connelly said. "And then it became my life's work in a lot of ways, and then that has spread out to other sports.”

Connelly said he was able to have fun with his work by anticipating big moments in the game, taking music requests from players and even tweeting back and forth with fans sitting in the stands.

"Like any good dream job, most of the days it is a dream, sometimes it is a job," he said. "It is important in those moments to remember where you are and what you're doing, and be grateful for that."

He added that it took time and effort to be able to "get it right" when it comes to being a good DJ.

“It comes from having lots of experience doing it," he said. "And also the tremendous frustration of occasionally missing something that you know would’ve been good because you were not fast enough to make it happen."

Connelly will continue to DJ for the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins while working on his own radio show, but made the decision himself to step back from his role with the Boston Red Sox.
