DRACUT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The home church of one of the pilots on 9/11 organized a food drive in his honor as the country reached the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks this weekend.
John Ogonowski of Dracut piloted American Airlines Flight 11, bound for California on the morning of September 11, 2001. Ogonowski was killed when the plane was hijacked and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Now, Ogonowski's church, St. Francis Parish in Dracut, is trying honor the pilot's memory by collecting food for the needy in his memory.
"John was all about helping people, and that was his spirit...what would he do?" said Debbie Hovanasian, a Communications Coordinator with the church.
The drive ran through Sunday, collecting non-perishables at the local Saja Farm. The participants that dropped by on Saturday were described as emotional by Hovanasian.
"Everybody just felt really good about being able to do something good on this day," she said.
