FCC Is Requiring Internet Providers To Be Transparent With Prices Upfront

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Federal Communications Commission is rolling out new guidelines on Thursday to require internet providers to be more transparent with their service prices upfront. These new rules will help consumers understand the full cost of service for home and mobile broadband internet plans instead of finding out later. This would require providers to clearly state charges such as the monthly price, contract length, complete list of monthly and one-time fees, along with typical download and upload speeds. WBZ’s James Rojas spoke to some residents who feel that this change is long overdue.

“It seems like common sense and a good thing [all around], it’s just frustrating when there’s no transparency,” said Dave from Somerville.

“That’s kind of the way it works right? Eventually a consumer gets screwed enough that they have to step in and regulate it so, it sucks but I’m glad they’re doing it,” added Dave.

The FCC said that the broadband labels will provide easy to understand, accurate information about the cost and performance of internet service.
