NORTH ANDOVER Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new day for Amazon in the Bay State as the corporation’s first robotics fulfillment center opened in North Andover on Monday. The center will have humans and robots working together to keep deadlines and get packages delivered on time. WBZ’s James Rojas was there for the grand opening on Monday and got to speak to Sergiy Sushalskyy, General Manager of the new facility.

“The majority of our robots have small drive units that [will] pick up the [shipments] and move them throughout the facility,” he said.

“Helping our associates to perform their daily tasks so this is more advanced technology than the rest [of what’s out there],” he added.

Also in attendance for the grand opening was Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, who got to see the robots at work.

“Robots [that] are being used here [are] deployed, that are actually made here in Massachusetts and it’s just part of like what’s so powerful about the ecosystem that we have here in our state with innovation, development, and technology,” said Healey.

In addition to the robots, over 1,500 associates from in and around the area have been hired to work there, creating new jobs and opportunities for many.

The facility is about 3.6 million square feet in size.
