BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – Some of the American flags planted at the Boston Public Garden, meant to honor those who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks, have been damaged.

The 2,997 flags were planted Wednesday in the 9/11 Garden of Remembrance near the park’s Arlington Street entrance.

On Thursday morning, several of flags were found uprooted and lying on the ground.

Carolyn Casey is with Project 351, the team that planted the flags. She said the project was designed “in loving memory of almost 3,000 people who died” in the attacks.

Many uprooted trashcans were also found in the area. Crews were at the garden quickly and people passing by also pitched in to help clean up the mess.

The Garden of Remembrance was finished in 2004 and commemorates the more than 200 people, with ties to Massachusetts, who died in the attacks.
