Former New Bedford Police Union Treasurer Agrees To Plead Guilty

BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former treasurer for New Bedford's police union agreed to plead guilty on charges related to stealing almost $50,000 in funding that belonged to the union.

Acting U.S. Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendall said 42-year-old Joshua Fernandes agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud.

Officials say he used the money to pay for vacations, family outings and other personal expenses. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

The Associated Press reached out to an attorney for Fernandes, but they could not immediately be reached for comment.

Fernandes was treasurer of the New Bedford Police Department union for almost 10 years until he was fired in 2019.
